Derek Allen is a M.A. student in the Portuguese program. He graduated with a B.A in Portuguese from Brigham Young University in 2014 with minors in English and Management, while also working as a research assistant for the Department of Plant Sciences. He is an American who learned Portuguese while spending two years as a volunteer service representative in the Luso-African countries of Mozambique and Angola. As an undergraduate, he participated in a student exchange program in Portugal through ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. He has strong interests in literature, film, colonization, race, sexuality, biopolitics, and national identity.
