Maria Karen is a first year Ph.D. Student in Hispanic Literature at Indiana University. She is originally from Mexico but grew up in Kentucky, where she received her B.A. in International Studies focused on Economics and Spanish at the University of Kentucky (2011); and obtained M.A. in Spanish and Latin American and Latino Studies from the University of Louisville (2013). She is interested in contemporary Latino(a)/ Chicano(a) literary and cultural production; Hispanic and Spanish-American identity through border theory; and Latin American economics and politics post 19th century. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, painting, traveling, and learning Arabic.
