Because I Want to See the Sea is an anthology of Rosalía de Castro’s Spanish and Galician poetry in translation. While Castro is a key figure in Spanish Romanticism and the flowering of Galician literature and this volume makes more of her poetry available to scholars and enthusiasts of the nineteenth century without a working knowledge of Spanish and Galician, it speaks primarily to a popular audience and the pressing questions of our age. This volume draws together pieces from across Castro’s five volumes of poetry, including the two from which nothing has previously been published in English: La Flor (1857) and A mi madre (1863), as well as the better known Cantares Gallegos (1863), Follas novas (1880), and En las orillas del Sar (1884).
