- Course Description
Note: Graduate students only.
This course explores current research on Spanish as a heritage language, preparing graduate students to conduct their own studies in the field. The course begins with a comprehensive examination of the characteristics that define a heritage speaker, including their upbringing and the inherent diversity within this population. Subsequently, the course delves into heritage language research across multiple subfields, beginning with theoretical underpinnings and methodologies including sociolinguistics, followed by pragmatics, morphosyntax, phonetics and phonology, and ending with heritage acquisition and maintenance. Through original synthesis and analyses, students will be encouraged to draw connections to previous graduate courses and to further empirical research in the study of heritage language populations. Although the primary focus is Spanish as a heritage language in the United States, comparative perspectives on other heritage languages will also be considered.
