You have three options for demonstrating language proficiency if you are a graduate student outside the department. Choose the option that works best for you:
- Complete the reading course HISP S492 with a grade of B (3.0) or better. You may register for the first course in the sequence, HISP S491, to prepare for HISP S492. Those who feel they have sufficient preparation may register for S492 only, after they first consult the language advisor. HISP S491 & HISP S492 are offered only during the summer.
- Earn a grade of B (3.0) or better in an IU Spanish course numbered HISP S300 or higher in literature, linguistics or culture (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Spanish.
- Achieve a score of 62 or higher on the GSFLE (Graduate School Foreign Language Exam). For registration and exam information, including applicable test fees, please contact the office of Bloomington Evaluation Services and Testing by email, telephone, or in person
- In order to qualify for in-depth Spanish language proficiency, you must first establish proficiency by any of the methods listed above (1-3). Once your proficiency has been established, the you must pass a course numbered HISP S500 or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better. The course may be in literature or linguistics and it must be taught in Spanish.
