Course Description

This course will survey Brazilian cinema from its beginnings to the present day. Although early filmmakers and works will be addressed, the primary focus of the course is on 1960s Cinema Novo and movies made in the post-Cinema Novo and revival periods. Topics include Third World Cinema, the aesthetics of hunger, documentary, Brazilian popular culture, migration, urban violence, and race and gender in Brazil. The course is taught in English. Films are in Portuguese with English subtitles.
