Prerequisite: S280 or S310; or appropriate placement exam score
This course aims to introduce students to the cultures of the Hispanic world, enabling them to develop a better understanding of the cultural and linguistic diversity among Spanish speakers. Through a variety of historical readings and films we learn about the cultural history of Spain and Latin America from ancient to modern times. We also apply the semiotic method to analyze various literary and non-literary texts, paintings, photography, buildings, and music encountered in Spain and Latin America. Further, students will be introduced to the critical terms relevant for the analysis of culture in the Spanish-speaking world, such as colonialism, mestizaje, and transculturation and learn to apply them. The class is taught in Spanish, and students will increase their linguistic fluency and get practice in teamworking through frequent groupwork and communicative interaction in varied settings. The course thus will prepare them both for academic work at the 400-level in Spanish and enhance their preparedness for a career after graduating. This course is conducted in Spanish.
