- Course Description
Prerequisite: HISP-S 280 or HISP-S 310; or appropriate placement exam score.
This course provides critical tools and concepts for the advanced study of Hispanic literatures. We will develop those skills through close readings of selected literary works from Spain and Spanish America covering a range of period and literary genres including theater, poetry, and prose. The course will also emphasize the importance of socio-historical context for literary analysis, insofar as literary works are influenced by the historical moment or time in which they are written or because writers may turn to literature in order break out of the confines from within which they write. Readings include works by Don Juan Manuel, Quevedo, Góngora, Garcilaso, Sor Juana, Gustavo Bécquer, Rubén Darío, José Martí, Delmira Agustini, César Vallejo, Octavio Paz, Rodolfo Usigli, Horacio Quiroga, María Luisa Bombal, , Juan Rulfo Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, José Donoso, Carlos Fuentes, Roberto Bolaño and Claudia Hernández.
