Prerequisite: HISP-S 280 or HISP-S 310; or appropriate placement exam score.
This course offers an introduction to literary and visual analysis of a variety of texts from Spain and Latin America, including narrative, poetry, theater, and graphic novels. It is organized thematically around some of the following topics: literary representations of ecology, plants, and climate change; depictions of utopias and dystopias; and representations of gender and racialization. Among other texts, we will read the graphic novel La vorágine, paying particular attention to the historical context that informs it. The course is designed to help students develop their skills in literary and visual interpretation and analysis, their critical thinking, and their writing and speaking abilities in Spanish. It also allows students to expand their knowledge of award-wining authors and literary theory. Class will be conducted entirely in Spanish.
