Prerequisite: HISP-S 280 or HISP-S 310; or appropriate placement exam score.

Reading literature is one of the best ways to improve both linguistic and cultural competence, while also fostering aesthetic appreciation and critical thinking. This course offers an introduction to the critical reading of Hispanic literature through the analysis of selected literary texts, including poetry, narrative, and theater, from Spain and Spanish America.  Students will learn how to use certain terms and concepts analytically in both oral expression and written form. This course highlights the importance of the cultural and historical context of literary works, encourages students to reflect on a variety of literary topics on the human condition and to relate them to their own cultural contexts. Evaluation will be based on written homework, essays, exams, and active participation. This course is conducted in Spanish.
