Prerequisite:  HISP-S 280 or equivalent course.

This course provides students with an introduction to the study of different types of Hispanic literary texts. Through in-class discussions and written work, students will learn about the relationship between texts and the context in which they were written.  Students will also acquire conceptual and analytical tools in Spanish in order to develop grounded interpretations of texts by analyzing both their content (stories, ideas, themes) and the form through which that content is expressed. The course’s approach stems from the proposition that by better understanding the way texts create meaning and engage with the ideas, changes, and preoccupations of their time, students will also become better, more sophisticated readers and writers, expand their linguistic and cultural competency, and improve their general fluency in Spanish. The analytical and linguistic tools that students learn in this course will also prepare them for more advanced classes in Spanish.
