Undergraduate Portuguese Language Programs

Portuguese overseas language programs

Students of Portuguese can choose from among five IU Programs, both in Brazil and in Portugal: CIEE Semester Programs in Bahia and Lisbon; CIEE Liberal Arts Semester Programs in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo; and a CIEE Business and Culture Semester Program in São Paulo.

In the past ten years, students have also enrolled in non-IU programs, including those in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Between 2010 and 2016, a total of 41 undergraduate students participated in study-abroad programs in Portuguese-speaking countries: 23 in IU-sponsored programs, and 19 in non-IU programs.


Brazil – Salvador da Bahia

Salvador da Bahia is a provincial city on the Atlantic coast with a rich, Afro-Brazilian culture. Earn 16-19 IU credit hours in this co-sponsored Liberal Arts program, starting with a 4-week intensive Portuguese language immersion component (for CIEE students only), followed by semester-long language coursework. Participants also enroll in one CIEE-based class with students from U.S. universities. You take 2-3 additional courses in the humanities and social sciences with Brazilian students at the Universidade Catolica do Salvador. This immersive experience involves a Bahian homestay.

To qualify, you must be in at least your third full-time semester of college and have taken or are enrolled in either: fourth semester college-level Portuguese or second semester college-level Spanish and Portuguese. An academic year option available to qualified students.


Brazil – Rio

Rio is a large, dynamic city with a thriving arts and music scene. This CIEE co-sponsored Liberal Arts program begins with a 4-week intensive Portuguese language immersion component, followed by semester-long language coursework. Students enroll in the remainder of their courses alongside Brazilian students at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de Rio de Janeiro. Outside of class, students engage with the local community through an integrated volunteer component as well as a Brazilian homestay.

To qualify, you must be in at least your third full-time semester of college and have taken or are enrolled in either: fourth semester college-level Portuguese or second semester college-level Spanish and Portuguese. An academic year option available to qualified students.


Portugal – Lisbon

Earn 15-18 IU credit hours through this CIEE co-sponsored Language and Culture semester program based in Lisbon, the historic, urban capital city of Portugal known for its architecture and hilly landscape. Begin with a 2-week intensive Portuguese language and culture pre-session course (taught in English for CIEE students) or direct enrollment in courses with Portuguese students through the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and the School of Economics. Live with a Portuguese family or in a residence hall.

To qualify, you must be in at least your third full-time semester of college and have taken or are enrolled in second semester college-level Portuguese. An academic year option available to qualified students.
