During the 2021 spring semester, Postdoctoral Research Scholar Dr. Julio López Otero and Professor Félix-Brasdefer organized the "Heritage Language Learning Reading Group." Students and faculty met once a month to read articles that addressed the learning process of heritage language learners, followed by stimulating discussions. The group hosted a virtual presentation by Dr. Josh Prada, assistant professor of Spanish at the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, who delivered a talk entitled "Heritage Language Teacher Development and Critical Applied Linguistics." In the future, readings and discussions will cover other areas of linguistics that examine the cognitive and social processes of this unique population of bilingual speakers, including morphosyntax, phonology, and pragmatics.
