Our department’s study abroad service-learning course takes place on the north coast of the Dominican Republic in Las Canas. The program is designed for students who wish to be involved in an international service project and practice their Spanish while earning credits toward graduation.
We partner with 7elements to provide service to the local communities in several projects, including providing community education on water filters, laying cement floors, cacao reforestation projects, among others. In addition to service, you’ll participate in cultural excursions and have opportunities to practice your pronunciation and grammar in an authentic communicative setting with native speakers.
All IU students are eligible. Prerequisites include completion of Spanish Grammar in Context (S280) with a B (3.0 GPA) or above. The application requires two letters of recommendation and a statement from the student.
