Spanish is a language of both national and global importance. It is the second most spoken language in the U.S. with an increasing presence in major metropolitan areas. Speakers of Spanish, English, or both, Hispanics make up almost one fifth of the U.S. population. Drawn from an increasingly diverse mix of countries and cultural heritages, they encompass a diversity of races and ethnicities.
Spanish B.A.
Globally, Spanish is spoken in over 20 countries and is one of the most demanded foreign languages worldwide. Spanish is thriving as a language in global business and commerce; in arts, design, and cultural management; in science research and the humanities; in publishing and entertainment; in global health and environmental management; and in politics and diplomacy.
The significance of Spanish in the United States has been expanding for some time due to the growing domestic Hispanic population, increased trade and cultural relations with Latin America, and Spain's growing role in the European Union. It is no wonder that many U.S. students have come to view Spanish as an almost indispensable tool for their future.
Combine your degree with other areas of study
This degree combines well with others. You can supplement your knowledge in another discipline by learning Spanish and studying the culture and literature of Spanish-speaking countries.
You might consider a double or triple major in other fields. You can choose secondary degrees in complementary areas such as Latin American Studies, International Studies, History, Anthropology, and more.
We also offer a minor in Spanish that complements many areas of study. For the Spanish minor, you complete 15 credit hours.
Talk to the undergraduate advisor to craft your own pathway to the degree that helps you meet your goals.
Overseas study
Our students are highly encouraged to pursue one or more study abroad experiences. In fact, 82% of our B.A. students participate in study abroad – the highest percentage of any department in the College. There are a variety of study abroad locations to choose from.
After having studied in your wonderful language department, I went on to use my Spanish extensively. Your department challenged me on a daily basis and the quality of the instruction in this department has made my language career possible.
