During fall 2020, professors Edgar Illas and Andrés Guzmán convened a reading group on the topic of neoliberalism. The group, organized through The Center for Theoretical Inquiry in the Humanities, attracted students and faculty from across campus who met to collectively study the theoretical and historical foundations of neoliberalism and track its contentious evolution. After conducting close readings of texts by Ludwig Von Mises, Friedrich Hayek, and Milton Friedman, the group turned to both established and newer accounts and critiques of neoliberalism by theorists ranging from Michel Foucault, Maurizio Lazzarato, and Wendy Brown to Adam Kotsko, Jackie Wang, and McKenzie Wark. Among the highlights of the semester were invited talks by Sandro Mezzadra, Verónica Gago, and Gabriel Rockhill.
