Language Proficiency Outside Department

Language proficiency requirements for graduate students outside the Department of Spanish and Portuguese

You have three options for demonstrating language proficiency if you are a graduate student outside the department. Choose the option that works best for you:

  1. Complete the reading course HISP S492 with a grade of B (3.0) or better. You may register for the first course in the sequence, HISP S491, to prepare for HISP S492. Those who feel they have sufficient preparation may register for S492 only, after they first consult the language advisor. HISP S491 & HISP S492 are offered only during the summer.
  2. Earn a grade of B (3.0) or better in an IU Spanish course numbered HISP S300 or higher in literature, linguistics or culture (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Spanish.
  3. Pass the Graduate Proficiency Exam in Spanish by achieving a score of 85% or higher in the Grammar section (at least 37 correct answers out of 43 questions) AND the Reading Comprehension section (at least 31 correct answers out of 36 questions).   4. In order to qualify for in-depth Spanish language proficiency, you must first establish proficiency by any of the methods listed above (1-3). Once your proficiency has been established, the you must pass a course numbered HISP S500 or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better. The course may be in literature or linguistics and it must be taught in Spanish.
  1. Complete the reading course sequence HISP P491 and HISP P492 with a grade of B (3.0) or better. As with Spanish, you may register for the first course in the sequence, HISP P491, to prepare for HISP P492. Those who feel they have sufficient preparation may register for P492 only, after they first consult the language advisor.
  2. Earn a grade of B (3.0) or better in an IU Portuguese course numbered HISP P300 or higher (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Portuguese.
  3. In order to qualify for in-depth Portuguese language proficiency, you must first establish proficiency by either of the two methods listed above. Once proficiency has been established, you must pass a course numbered HISP P500 or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better. The course must be taught in Portuguese, and individual readings may not be counted for this purpose.
  1. Receive a grade of B (3.0) or better in an IU Catalan course numbered HISP C400 or higher (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Catalan.
  2. In order to qualify for In-depth Catalan language proficiency, you must first establish proficiency by the method listed above. Once proficiency has been established, you must pass a course numbered HISP C500 or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better (excluding individual readings). The course must be taught in Catalan.
