Note that all courses must be taught in the target language.
Language Proficiency
Spanish
You meet this requirement by completing HISP S105, or the equivalent, and one course at the 500-level or higher (excluding HISP S517) with a grade of B (3.0) or better.
Portuguese
You meet this requirement by completing HISP P135, or the equivalent, and one course at the P500-level or higher, with grades of B (3.0) or better.
Catalan
You meet this requirement by completing two courses at the HISP C400-level or higher with grades of B (3.0) or better.
In-depth language proficiency
You first establish proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese or Catalan by one of the methods described above. You must then pass another course at the 500-level or higher with a grade of B (3.0) or better.
Other languages
In consultation with program directors, you may choose to fulfill language proficiency requirements in other languages that fit your research interests. To do this, follow the guidelines for demonstrating proficiency established by the department or center offering coursework or exams in the desired language and plan your coursework accordingly.
