Course Description

Prerequisite:  HISP-S 281 or appropriate placement score

This course provides students with the chance to enhance their existing Spanish proficiency while simultaneously acquiring additional skills. Through the study of political, educational, cultural, sociolinguistic and literary issues related to Hispanics and Spanish in the United States. We will emphasize a process-oriented approach to writing, including activities such as planning, outlining, writing, peer review, editing, and finalization. For academic writing, we will focus on examining stylistic (e.g., spelling accents, complex sentences, transition words) and grammatical (e.g., hypothetical clauses, relative pronouns, passive voice) topics that are essential to writing. Additionally, the student will have the opportunity to develop their oral discourse through speeches, debates and academic presentations. The final project consists of conducting a community project in which the students can use their creativity while employing their literacy skills.

Note: HISP-S 309 is for Heritage speakers of Spanish.  Students who grew up with Spanish being spoken in the home.

Note: If HISP-S 309 is the first Spanish class you take with us, it may be used in place of HISP-S 280 to claim special credit for HISP-S 200 & HISP-S 250.

  1. You need to completed HISP-S 309 with a “C” or better.
  2. Not have S200 or S250 on your transcript yet.
  3. You are NOT a native speaker of Spanish.

Note: HISP-S 309 counts the same as HISP-S 308 for the Spanish major and minor degrees.
