- Course Description
Prerequisite: S280 or S310 or Consent of the Department
This course offers an introduction to the cultural history of Spain and Latin America. Students will learn about topics ranging from colonialism, indigenous cultures, nation formation, modernization, social and political movements, race, gender, and sexuality though the close study of various cultural objects and media such as paintings, film, photography, music, technology, and the built environment, among others. Students will develop critical insight into how historical meaning is culturally embedded and negotiated. Students will also become equipped with conceptual and analytical tools that will allow them to understand and express how different cultural objects produce meaning. Ultimately, the knowledge and skills in critical thinking that students gain in this class will equip them with the necessary tools for success in their professional and civic life.
