Prerequisite: S280 or S310 or Consent of the Department

How has the Spanish-speaking world understood itself and struggled with societal change, conflict and the emergence of new voices? This course provides a broad overview of Spanish and Spanish American cultural history from medieval and pre-Columbian times to our current age. Through the study of paintings, photographs, films and short readings, students will learn the critical skills and vocabulary needed for the analysis of cultural texts. We will explore various contexts shaped by encounters between distinct cultures, changes spurred on by economic and technological transformations, and projects of social unification, resistance and revolution. We will look at how terms including pureza de sangre, coloniality and mestizaje enable us to think critically about cultural history.

The course will be conducted in Spanish, emphasizing students’ continued development of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
