Course Description

Prerequisites: HISP-S 280 or HISP-S 310; or appropriate placement exam score.

This course deepens the knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language within the context of linguistics, the scientific study of human language. The course begins with an introduction to the Spanish language, followed by an exploration of key subfields of linguistics. These include the analysis of word structure (morphology), the combination of words at the sentence level (syntax), the organization and patterns of the sound system (phonetics and phonology), and the study of meaning and its contextual usage (semantics and pragmatics). Lastly, we will cover linguistic variation in the Spanish-speaking world through the relationships of language and social structures (sociolinguistics), and how languages interact and influence each other (contact linguistics).
