Statement on Inclusiveness
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is a community of scholars, teachers, students, and staff from a wide range of cultures, nationalities, ethnicities, races, and social backgrounds. We are committed to diversity and non-discrimination, and to maintaining an environment of inclusiveness and respect. We respect all people regardless of age, culture, disabilities, ethnic origin, gender, gender identity, marital status, nationality, citizenship, race, religion, sexual orientation, first-generation status, and socioeconomic status—as well as other categories not exhaustively covered in this list. We also promote the inclusion of varied opinions in our classrooms and interactions with one another, and the use of civil discourse to achieve these goals.
As an interdisciplinary, multi-ethnic, and multicultural community, we strive for equality at all levels of our work. We embrace our diversity as an enriching opportunity to grow and learn. We celebrate education as a vehicle for more inclusive practices in our research, teaching, and service. We acknowledge our responsibility in creating and maintaining an academic community in which all feel welcome.
