Course Description

Note: Graduate students only.

The first of a two-part survey of literature in Portuguese, this course will cover works written from the medieval period through romanticism in Brazil and Portugal. The emergence of national literatures in Portugal and Brazil, as well as of African and African-Brazilian literature will also be discussed. Focus on literary authors and works that illuminate social, political and historical issues, including imperialism and overseas expansion, gender awareness, as well as nation building and revolution. Readings and discussion in Portuguese.
