Goals of the course:
This course provides a graduate-level introduction to the study of syntactic analysis, with a focus on Spanish. The course examines syntax considered at the interfaces with other linguistic fields (morphology, semantics, pragmatics). In each of the subsections of the course (Introduction, The noun phrase, The verb phrase) there is at least one topic in which we will cover both the synchronic and the diachronic perspective. The goals of the course are to provide students with: (i) analytical skills and an ability to develop a syntactic argumentation, and (ii) the tools to identify and explore research topics in Spanish and more broadly Romance linguistics.

Class time will be devoted to discussion of the readings and to exercises. The general structure of each week will be: one day of theoretical explanation (Día de teoría) and one day of student-led discussion (Discusión/tertulia). Particular attention will be given to the details of the theoretical and empirical argumentation behind each issue. Students are expected to prepare the assigned readings for class, be ready to discuss the class topic, and complete problem sets as detailed in the syllabus.
