This course presents an overview of second language acquisition theories, with an emphasis on Spanish learning. We will explore different angles of SLA, through topics that include interlanguage, language transfer, input processing, monitor hypothesis, interaction hypothesis, shallow processing, immersion, explicit and implicit acquisition, among others. Students will be encouraged to explore some of these topics in depth according to their academic interests.
Through engagement in critical discussions and assignments, students in this course will:
gain an understanding of topics with a long-standing tradition in the literature on second language acquisition, as well as important directions that have emerged in recent years;
- develop critical understanding of methodological approaches to research issues in SLA;
- investigate issues in SLA in connection with their own research interests;
- reflect on current teaching practices and how they reflect (or not) SLA findings;
- critically assess and review a colleague’s work, by providing rigorous and respectful feedback
