- Course Description
Note: Graduate students only.
In this course we study significant works across the Latinx canon with a focus on hemispheric connections, studying the ways in which entangled histories of imperialism, im/migration, and hyphenated identities have created a distinct tradition of writing that is at home in more than one language. Our guiding line of inquiry will be how language ideologies around translation and bilingualism have evolved and shaped Latinx literature, allowing it to establish alternative archives of languages and ways of knowing. We will read major texts of Latino-Caribbean, Central American, and Chicana literature, including Gloria Anzaldúa, Junot Díaz, Achy Obejas, and Javier Zamora. Class will be taught in Spanish and English.
