This course aims to provide students with an overview of the cultural histories of Spain and Latin America from ancient to modern times and highlight how the past impinges upon the present. Special attention will be given to visual culture (including architecture, fine arts, photography, and film), to critical categories such as gender, race, and class, as well as those specific to or particularly relevant for the analysis of culture in the Spanish-speaking world, such as colonialism, mestizaje, transculturation, etc. The language skills as well as the critical and analytical tools that students learn in this course will improve their linguistic and cultural competence in Spanish and prepare them for 400-level courses in Spanish.

This course carries CASE A&H and CASE GCC distribution credit.
