Prerequisite: HISP-S 280 or HISP-S 310; or appropriate placement exam score.
- Course description:
This course is an introduction to basic concepts and methodology used in Spanish Linguistics. The main goal of the course is to provide students with the opportunity to learn the tools of linguistic analysis and to apply them to the study of Spanish. Attention will be given to different levels of analysis in linguistics including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, second language acquisition, and language variation. Class time will be divided between lecture, problem-solving exercises, and discussion. Evaluation will be based on exams, class participation, homework, experiments, and other assignments.
- Goals:
After successful completion of this course, the student will:
- Be able to distinguish the different levels of linguistic analysis.
- Be able to identify and use linguistic units at different levels.
- Understand and be able to explain the distinction between phonetic and phonological studies and their units of analysis.
- Understand the basic concepts related to morphology and syntax as well as their particular units of analysis.
- Recognize the different processes of word formation: affixation, compounding, and morpheme-internal changes.
- Understand basic notions for examining the meaning of words and sentences.
- Understand regional variation in the Spanish-speaking world.
- Understand and be able to explain language contact situations and the characteristics of bilingual speakers in the US.
- Understand basic concepts of second language acquisition research.
- Develop basic skills for being able to critically examine research and theoretical aspects of linguistics.
