- Course Description
Prerequisite: HISP-S 280 or HISP-S 310; or appropriate placement exam score.
This course is an introduction to basic concepts and methodology used in Spanish Linguistics. The main goal of the course is to provide students with the opportunity to learn the tools of linguistic analysis and to apply them to the study of Spanish. Attention will be given to different levels of analysis in linguistics including theories of communication, morphology (word formation), syntax (word order), phonetics and phonology (sound system), language variation (sociolinguistics and dialectology), second language acquisition, and semantics (meaning). The underlying purpose is to awaken students’ interest in Spanish linguistics; to provide them with a foundation in the terminology and concepts necessary for studying higher level courses on the subject. Students will be evaluated through written exams, class engagement, homework, data analysis, and a group final project.
Course objectives
Through engagement in critical discussions and assignments, students in this course will:
- understand basic concepts of linguistics to pursue their studies in advanced courses in the field;
- study and analyze the structure of the Spanish language;
- analyze written and oral samples produced by Spanish speakers;
- reflect on their own language practices.
