Diálogos XXII, a graduate student conference hosted by the Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC) in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, took place this year on February 28th and March 1st, 2025.
The conference had three keynote speakers: from literature, linguistics and Portuguese, with two in person and one online. For our literature keynote speaker, Dr. Bob Davidson visited from the University of Toronto’s Victoria college and presented on Spain´s Fragrant Modernity and gave a workshop on Sensorial Teaching. Dr. Paulo Dutra, from the University of New Mexico was our Portuguese keynote speaker and gave a presentation titled “Afro-Brazilian Women`s A(r)mor-piercing Poetry”, and a workshop about the job market, titled “Don’t be yourself; some tips on the job market.” The last keynote speaker, in linguistics, gave a presentation on Zoom from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Whitney Chappell gave a presentation titled “Accounting for the individual models of socio-indexical knowledge.”
In addition to our keynote speakers, we had a workshop by Dr. Madelein Gonin from CITL and Dr. Xiaojin Kou from CeLT on the topic of Inclusive Language Teaching: Creating Connection and Supporting Student Success.
The conference had 28 presentations and 35 presenters, with 26 graduate students from Indiana University and 9 presenters from other national and international universities: including University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign, Manchester University, Wabash County Diversity Coalition, Idaho State University, University of Central Florida, University of Illinois Mellon Fellow, University of Wisconsin- Madison, and Universidad Veracruzana. Presentations focused on a wide range of topics, including heritage speakers, language change, linguistic identity and attitudes, Brazilian literature analysis, national identity, Simón Bolivar, and more. The conference was a success and showcased the wide range of research being conducted by our graduate students.
