Course Description

Note: Graduate students only.

In this course, we will explore a diverse selection of texts by women writers from the Portuguese-speaking world, including Brazil, Portugal, and Portuguese-speaking Africa. We ask key questions: how do the authors conceptualize women’s writing, challenge established literary histories, and defy conventions? Throughout history, women have employed various strategies to write, create, and perform the literary. What methods, genres, themes, styles did they favor, and why? What insights do their writings offer us on feminism, love, race, politics, and the Lusophone historic-social landscape? Finally, how do these past feminine and feminist reflections help us understand critically contemporary gender and sexual politics?
