- Course Description
This is an advanced language course focused on refining students’ abilities in writing, speaking, and reading in Portuguese. To do this we turn to exploring the power of storytelling in Portuguese through amusing, playful, deeply meaningful children’s and young-adult literature from Portugal, Brazil, and Lusophone Africa. While learning about these writers and the cultural and historical contexts in which they wrote, students are introduced to literary analysis, translation, the role of illustration, oral tradition, and language variety. We read illustrated and chapter books, poetry, and short contemporary young-adult novels focusing on how narratives shape cultural identity, transmit values, and spark imagination across generations. The course strengthens reading comprehension skills, grammar, vocabulary usage, and descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing.
