This M.A. requires 30 credit hours in the department. A minimum of 4 courses must be in Spanish literature at the 500 level, with the remaining courses taken at the 500 level or above. As many as two courses in either Catalan or Portuguese culture and literature may count towards the degree.

The M.A. culminates in a six-hour written examination, broken into three sections. Three hours are given to writing an essay, 1.5 hours are dedicated to textual analysis, and another 1.5 hours involve textual identifications.
A reading list is provided for preparation for the M.A. in Hispanic Literatures exam.
Some students enter graduate school with a wish to pursue both the M.A. and Ph.D., indicating this in their initial statement of purpose. Admission to the M.A. program does not imply that once the degree is received you may automatically begin work for the Ph.D.—the department will decide in each case.
