The M.A. requires a minimum of 30 credit hours in graduate-level courses, with at least 20 credit hours in departmental courses. A thesis (1-6 credits) is optional. With the approval of your advisor, you may take up to 10 credit hours of coursework in a minor field.

The M.A. culminates in a six-hour written examination, broken into three sections. Three hours are given to writing an essay, 1.5 hours are dedicated to textual analysis, and another 1.5 hours involve textual identifications.
Some students enter graduate school with a wish to pursue both the M.A. and Ph.D., indicating this in their initial statement of purpose. Admission to the M.A. program does not imply that once the degree is received you may automatically begin work for the Ph.D.—the department will decide in each case.
