Course Description

VT: Storytelling in Portuguese: Children’s and Young Adult Literature
Prerequisite: P200-P250 or equivalent

This is an advanced course on reading and conversation in Portuguese, designed to refine students’ abilities in reading, writing, and speaking. To build vocabulary and competence in more sophisticated Portuguese, we turn our attention to several celebrated authors from Brazil, Portugal, and Portuguese-speaking Africa that wrote stories and poetry for children and young adults. In this course we will read a wide selection of this amusing, playful, yet deeply meaningful literature, and learn about these important writers, their biographies, and the cultural and historical contexts in which they wrote. As we read, discuss, and learn to analyze and interpret these texts, we build our skills in reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary usage, and descriptive, narrative, expository, and persuasive writing.
