The Department of Spanish and Portuguese stands in solidarity with Asian and Asian-American communities in the United States and condemn the recent acts of violence committed against members of these communities, especially women. Such acts of violence emerge from entrenched dynamics of racism and misogyny that have been compounded by the pandemic and rhetoric that seeks to blame specifically Chinese and Chinese American, and, more generally, Asians and Asian-Americans, for COVID-19.
We deeply value the Asian and Asian-American members of our department and campus. We reaffirm that as an interdisciplinary, multi-ethnic, and multicultural community, our department strives for racial equality at all levels of our work.
