Course Description

Note: Graduate Students only

Spanish Through Cultural Expressions is a course specifically designed for current teachers of K-12 Spanish courses. Its goal is to explore cultural expressions from the Hispanic world (narrative fiction and nonfiction, art/visual media, and music/poetry) with two main purposes: to engage in textual analysis of and research about visual and written culture in a Cultural Studies framework, and to develop skills and strategies for the use of authentic cultural materials in the classroom. This course is structured around content units, each focused on a type of cultural expression. In each unit, students will engage with primary cultural materials of that type, as well as ancillary primary materials and secondary sources. Each unit will include assessment of comprehension, video discussions on Canvas, an analysis activity, and the development of a module or lesson that the student could implement in their own classroom. This course is 100% online, through asynchronous instruction. It is offered as a part of a collaborative academic program for the Collaborative Graduate Certificate in Spanish.
