This course provides an introduction to the fundamental concepts of pragmatics from a cognitive and sociocultural perspective. After examining the scope of pragmatics, the main components of the field will be reviewed, including speech act theory, deixis, reference, presupposition, implicature, politeness/impoliteness, and information structure. Pragmatic concepts will be discussed in relation to other areas of linguistics such as semantics, syntax, sociolinguistics, phonology, and discourse. The last component of the course examines pragmatic concepts within the fields of discourse analysis and prosody. This course provides the foundation for future advanced courses in pragmatics, discourse analysis, and interlanguage pragmatics. Examples will be taken from different varieties of Spanish and English.
