Course Description

Prerequisite:  HISP-S 280 or HISP-S 310

This course offers an introduction to the literary analysis and interpretation of texts from Spain and Latin America, including narrative, poetry, theater, and graphic novels. The course is organized thematically, focusing on three main topics: literary representations of ecology and climate change, depictions of utopias and dystopias, and representations of gender and racialization. Throughout the semester we will be reading Isabel Allende’s La casa de los espíritus, in addition to other texts, and we will pay particular attention to the historical context that informs the novel. The course is designed to help students develop their skills in literary analysis, their critical thinking, and their writing and speaking abilities in Spanish. It also allows students to expand their knowledge of award-wining authors and literary theory. Class will be conducted entirely in Spanish.
