Andrés Ayala, B.A., 2021 (Spanish and International Studies), has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English in Mexico.

Kyle Billman, B.A., 2014, graduated with Spanish and Linguistics majors and a German minor. He is owner and founder of Bloomington-based business Goldleaf Hydroponics. Kyle is a consultant for hydroponics, organic gardening, indoor growing, and cannabis cultivation. Kyle met his wife and partner Mónica at IU and they now have two children. Kyle and Mónica, being a native speaker from Mexico, are successfully raising their children to be bilingual. In addition to growing their business and family, Kyle and Mónica are building their permaculture farm, and Kyle has remained an active musician and multi-instrumentalist focusing on Latin-Caribbean genres.

Tim Dawson, B.A., 1992 (Spanish), now lives in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), Spain, and is a voice actor also doing missionary work in public health, education, and for the Iglesia Española Reformada Episcopal.

Jennifer Flake, B.A., 1999 (Spanish), earned a Master of Science Degree in Speech-Language Pathology with the Bilingual Professional Licensure Endorsement from the University of New Mexico in May 2022. She participated in the Comunidad Crecer Program, an international bilingual partnership between the University of New Mexico's Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences and Comunidad Crecer, meaning “community for growth,” a small private school outside Mexico City dedicated to assessing and educating children with multiple disabilities.

Gaëlle Le Calvez House, Ph.D., 2021 (Hispanic Literatures), has received a prestigious Emerging Voices Fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). Gaëlle will carry out her fellowship at the Humanities Division of Yale University.

Ronald Powell, M.A., 1977 (Spanish), is an aviation medical examiner. He has been appointed as a Human Intervention Motivation Study Examiner that helps pilots that are on drugs and alcohol as part of his work as an aviation medical examiner. Ronald has certified air traffic controllers and is also an instructor, ENT doctor, and rated pilot with nearly 100 flying hours.

Kathleen Sideli, M.A., 1975 (Spanish) and Ph.D., 1983 (Spanish Literature), has been a long-standing staff member here at IU for the last 40+ years working both as an instructor in the department and working in the study abroad program. She retired at the end of June, ending her long career here at IU that started with her graduate work in the department. She started in the Madrid program and worked her way up to being the associate vice president for overseas study. During her time in the department, she worked with most of the current faculty in some capacity and considers her time here to be a defining period in her life.

Addison Sparks, B.A. and B.S., 2020 (Spanish and Biology), is now a first-year medical student at the University of Toledo. She has also been elected as the executive director of the university’s student-run free clinic, providing medical care to the uninsured. She uses her Spanish skills almost daily to communicate with and interpret for patients. She firmly believes that in-person interpreting is the standard of care, and is working to expand the interpreter services at her clinic and ensure that their patients can communicate in their preferred language.
