The Spanish Phonetics Working Group, Fonemi, was established in the fall of 2022 as a forum for graduate students and faculty members to converge and collectively share their passion for the field, especially after the years of isolation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. It serves as a space where ideas are exchanged, research is discussed, and mutual support is provided.
The group’s primary objective is to create an inclusive and supportive environment where graduate students from different departments across campus can collaborate and strengthen their understanding of Spanish phonetics and phonology. By engaging in weekly discussions of research papers, exploring various methodologies, and sharing insights and experiences, participants cultivate their expertise and enrich their research skills.
Moreover, the working group extends beyond academic discussions, functioning as both a social support network and a source of motivation. Last year, the group gathered every Friday, both in person and online. These meetings served as opportunities not only to exchange academic resources but also to engage in casual conversations, nurturing a spirit of camaraderie and fostering a sense of belonging.
The Spanish Phonetics Working Group has become an asset within our department, offering graduate students a unique opportunity to collaborate, learn from each other, and collectively contribute to the advancement of knowledge in Spanish phonetics and phonology. We look forward to continuing the group next year, extending the invitation to new students and anyone interested in the field.
